I was drawn to the idea of finding out what happened to the enigmatic pop star who mysteriously vanished; and Kat Green, the person who sought out to find the missing star. What started out as a slow-paced read in the first half, eventually flipped to a fast-pace, bizarre conclusion by the end of the book. I love how each chapter went back and forth between the past of Roskoe Darke’s band and another case which Kat had dealt with– the story of Cherry and Blue, another promising pop duo who have secrets of their own.

I also appreciated the bit of commentary on the dangers of young teenagers and their quick rise to fame, which can ultimately lead to burnout fast. There was an underlying message on how the music industry can prey upon young artists and how damaging that can be for them. The book is also told in a mixed media format– using video transcriptions, articles, comments, and song lyrics to immerse readers into the story.

As for the characters, Kat was a fantastic protagonist. At the beginning, readers are left wondering more about Kat’s character– for example, why she choose this field of work; or why she appears to have some sort of fascination with celebrities who have seemingly vanished. She is a very intriguing character, and I liked how the author managed to build this character and fill in all of the missing gaps of Kat’s characterisation by the end of the book.

They Lie Here is a novel that can captivate readers, and indulge them in the thrilling mystery, and leaving no room for readers to keep their minds at ease. I had a lot of fun formulating my own theories and trying to make connections, which ultimately fell short on the final conclusion. This novel is quite the standout in its genre. I look forward to reading more from the author in the future.
